Designed specifically for 5-6 year olds, this group class provides an exciting and supportive environment where young learners can develop essential musical skills before transitioning into private or group lessons on specific instruments.
The Best Path to Lifelong Musical Enjoyment
Many parents are eager to start private lessons early, but starting too soon can lead to frustration. Our Music Foundations class ensures that children associate music with joy and success, setting them up for a smooth transition to individual instrument lessons when they are ready.
Rather than struggling with challenging techniques too early, students in this class develop a love for music, an understanding of rhythm, and a foundation of skills that will help them excel when they begin private lessons.
Curriculum
All student start in Sessions 1 (Drums & Percussion) or 2 (Piano and Ukulele). Each session is 10 weeks long. After completing sessions 1 and 2, many students transition to private or group instruction if they’re old enough and ready. Younger students can continue to advance through all eight sessions if they desire.

This session focuses on rhythm, coordination, and playing in time with a group. Students will learn how to read basic rhythms, develop limb coordination, and explore different percussion instruments. Through engaging activities, they will build timing skills and learn to start and stop together as a group.

This session focuses on melody and harmony, introducing students to fundamental keyboard and ukulele skills. They will learn note recognition, finger placement, and simple melodies on the keyboard, along with chords, strumming, and transitioning between notes on the ukulele.

This session introduces students to the exciting world of percussion using unconventional instruments—trash bins! Students will explore rhythm, coordination, and performance techniques while learning how to create music with everyday objects. The session culminates in a fun group performance where they showcase their new skills.

This session focuses on playing in time with music and with others. Students will explore the keyboard and drum kit, learning how to coordinate their limbs, play rhythms with different body parts, and create unique sound effects. The final weeks bring all concepts together in a fun and interactive performance experience.

This session builds on previous learning and expands students' abilities on keyboard, drums, and ukulele while introducing additional instruments. Students will reinforce foundational skills, explore new techniques, and engage in group activities that enhance their musical creativity. The focus remains on having fun while developing musical confidence.

This session focuses on creating a dynamic performance piece using trash bins as percussion instruments. Students will develop coordination, learn multiple song parts, and explore different sound effects while preparing for a group performance at our big TTSM concert. Homework will involve practicing percussion techniques using household items like bins, wooden spoons, or cardboard boxes. This session encourages creativity and rhythmic exploration while reinforcing teamwork and focus.

This session expands on previous sessions by introducing more complex rhythms, melodies, and techniques. Students will continue to develop their coordination, timing, and musical expression while playing a variety of instruments. The focus is on refining their skills, deepening their understanding of music, and having fun in a collaborative learning environment.

This session emphasizes playing keyboard and drums both individually and together. Students will refine their understanding of harmony and melody on the keyboard while developing stronger rhythmic coordination on the drums. The focus will be on combining both instruments in group play, reinforcing timing, teamwork, and musical expression.

Music foundations is $30 per student and lasts 10 weeks. For your first foundations class, we include two of the classes for free.

Others may choose to continue with additional Foundations sessions, deepening their skills while having fun in a social learning environment. Each session is 10 weeks long and you’ll be enrolling in the full 10 weeks. We have 8 unique sessions so that a 5 year old can potentially take two full years of Music Foundations before transitioning to private lessons.

Students will explore a variety of instruments, including drums, keyboard, ukulele, and even unconventional percussion like trash bins! Most sessions focus on 1-2 instruments.

No. Many of our students advance to private lessons at the end of Sessions 1 or 2. Depending on your child’s age and readiness, then can either advance to another program or continue with Music Foundations as long as they like.

No problem! They can continue with additional Foundations sessions to build more skills and confidence before transitioning to private lessons. We have the potential for 2 years of Foundations curriculum, so it’s built for students to be able to take lessons when then turn 5 years old, all the way until they’re 7 years old. Or, if they start when they’re 5, 5 ½, or 6, they can transition earlier.

No, all instruments are provided during the class. However, practicing at home with household items (like using a box for percussion) can be beneficial.

Yes! Some sessions include a performance opportunity where students can showcase their progress in a fun and supportive environment.

If your child is 5 or 6 years old and enjoys music and movement, this program is a great fit! No prior experience is necessary.

We will provide materials and guidance to help them catch up, and they can still participate in the next session. However, there are no make-up classes or refunds for group lessons.
