Why Join Our Rock Band Program?

1. Have Fun Learning Music

Learning music by playing songs in a band is an exciting and engaging way to develop musical skills. It’s a fun and dynamic experience that keeps students motivated and excited to practice and perform.

2. Build Confidence

Performing with a band and playing in front of a live audience helps students gain confidence and overcome stage fright. These skills extend far beyond the stage, boosting self-esteem and public speaking abilities.

Over a couple of years, I watched the band members go from timid singers who had to learn to sing and play, to confident rock stars!
— Shelley Bolen, Band Mom

3. Learn Teamwork

Playing in a band teaches students how to work together toward a common goal. Each member has a role to play, and success comes from collaboration and mutual respect.

Through practicing, negotiating song choices, and supporting each other on and off the stage, I think all the band members became more confident, successful, and compassionate!
— Lauren Jones, Band Mom

4. Develop Advanced Musical Skills

Beyond learning individual instruments, students will develop skills in timing, dynamics, and musical expression as they play together. They’ll also explore songwriting, improvisation, and performance techniques.

5. Make Lifelong Friends

The camaraderie of a rock band creates bonds that last a lifetime. Students will connect with peers who share their passion for music.

The kids are still great friends and love to jam together.
— Lauren Jones, Band Mom

6. Perform Like a Rockstar

There’s no thrill like stepping onto a stage, feeling the energy of the crowd, and performing live. Our bands have the chance to showcase their hard work at local venues and community events.

Tahoe Riff Raff has played at iconic local venues such as the Tahoe City Ice Rink, Palisades, and the Truckee Craw Thaw, even opening for a band at the Tahoe City Commons Beach summer music series. Watching them perform is an unforgettable experience!”
— Shelley Bolen, Band Mom

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The cost is $40 per student per session, with some additional fees for performances.

  • Yes! We also offer needs-based scholarships on a sliding scale—our goal is to make this program accessible to ALL students.

  • Our band mentors are some of the best performers in the Tahoe Truckee region or have a music production background. They come from top local bands, some of which have been voted among the best in the Tahoe area by the Sierra Sun. Many of our mentors are local headliners (and even members of high school bands that younger students can relate to). They work closely with students on playing songs, building a setlist, and developing performance skills to help them shine on stage.

  • Students can play guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, or sing. If your child is interested in another instrument, we can likely make that work too!

  • Bands meet once a week for rehearsals, which typically last 45 minutes to an hour, with additional performances scheduled occasionally.

  • No prior experience is required! If your child can count to 8 and thinks being in a band sounds cool, they’re welcome. And if your kid is already a ripping musician, we’ll match them with other advanced musicians.

  • Tahoe Truckee School of Music hosts 150 live events a year, providing plenty of opportunities for student bands to perform. From small open mic nights to performing on stage at Palisades Tahoe or at the Tahoe City Commons Beach music series, your child will gain incredible stage experience.

  • We encourage parents to attend performances, but rehearsals are typically for students and instructors only to foster independence and focus.

  • We understand that things come up. Students can coordinate with their instructor to catch up on what they missed. But there are no make-up lessons or refunds for missed lessons. Lessons scheduling follows the TTUSD calendar and all holidays are observed (and not charged).

  • Click any of the “Request Info” buttons to get on the list so we can match your student with the right band, instrument, and experience level. There are opportunities to join new bands that are forming as well as cycle in on existing bands that need another musician.

  • Practices will take place at our main facilities in Truckee and Tahoe City, with several bands also able to practice in Kings Beach.

  • It’s not required, and you can make that decision later based on how the band is progressing. The most important thing is to join a band and have fun!

  • The member members and mentor will select a song together and work on one song at a time. The goal of this program is to play music together.
